Blue Book 17is from a series of photographs made during Dayanita Singh’s wanderings in the industrial landscapes of India in 2008. In these works Singh was drawn to the colour blue, for ‘its references, its melancholy, its coldness and its absence’. Here the photographer infuses architecture with a nostalgic mood through her use of light, texture and tone. There is a stark contrast between industry as an impersonal subject and the emotions the photographs evoke. This complementarity provides Singh’s Blue Book with a new language: psychological urban landscapes rather than documentary images.
